Ellipticals are easier on the knees than running. If you still want to run, see our best treadmills. For a seated, pedalling option, look at exercise bikes. For a full-body pull, try a rowing machine.

Stride Length Decides Comfort

Stride length is the distance your foot travels in one cycle. If it is too short for your legs, the motion feels choppy and stair-like. Most guidance says 18 inches or more suits people taller than about 5 ft 8 in. Shorter users are comfortable at 15 to 16 inches. Very short users should check the rated height range, because a long stride can be hard to use.

Canadian reviews show it. Buyers 5 ft 9 in or taller describe the Niceday CT11S as choppy with its 15.5 in stride. Niceday sells a 20 in variant for taller users. A 5-foot buyer could not get the Teeter's 18 in stride to work. The Weslo has the shortest stride here at 12 in.

The Sunny SF-E3889SMART and the Teeter list 18 in. The YOSUDA listing gives 15.5 in in the title and 18 in in the specs, so ask the seller before you buy.

Standing, Seated or Hybrid: Pick the Format

Four of the seven are standing ellipticals: the Niceday, FOUSAE, Sunny and Weslo. You stand and hold moving handles. Impact stays low, because your feet never leave the pedals.

Two are seated cross trainers: the Teeter FreeStep LT3 and the Sunny SF-RBE420035. Your weight rests on a seat, which is gentler on knees and back. The step-through frame is easy to get on and off, so they suit older users and anyone with joint pain.

The YOSUDA is a 3-in-1 hybrid of elliptical, cardio climber and stepper. Its climbing motion is not a classic elliptical stride.

Who should skip all of them? Anyone who wants a run. An elliptical does not copy running, so a treadmill is the better match. If you want to stay seated and pedal, an exercise bike is simpler. For back and arms as well as legs, look at a rowing machine.

Warranty and Service in Canada

The Niceday gives one year and the FOUSAE 12 months. The Sunny recumbent lists one year on the frame and 180 days on other parts. The Weslo offers only 90 days. The Teeter and YOSUDA listings state no terms, and the Teeter listing describes support as US-based.

The Sunny SF-E3889SMART is the clearest warning. Canadian reviewers say its warranty was not honoured, and 34% of its last 100 reviews are poor.

Buy from Amazon.ca or a brand-direct listing, and ask about Canadian service before you pay.

Why Only Seven Ellipticals Made the List

Many popular names are missing. Here is why.

  • Schwinn 430 — unavailable on Amazon.ca.
  • Schwinn 470 — only a third-party seller, at $2,488.88.
  • Bowflex M3 Max Trainer — a compact stepper-style machine, held by resellers at $1,549.99 to $1,988.88.
  • Dripex, THERUN and TODO — four full-size models with zero or one Canadian review.

The seven that remain all have a legitimate Amazon.ca offer and Canadian reviews.

Canada's 24-Hour Movement Guidelines ask adults for at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous aerobic activity a week.

A low-impact machine you will keep using beats a harder one that ends up in the garage.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Niceday CT11S, at $799.99. It carries up to 181 kg, the most of any full-size upright here. It has 16 magnetic levels and a 16 lb flywheel. Recent Canadian reviews are only 12% negative. Its stride is 15.5 in, with a 20 in version for tall users.

The FOUSAE, at $499.99. It has 16 magnetic levels, a 15.5 in stride and app support. Recent Canadian reviews are only 9% negative. A third-party seller sells it, with a one-year warranty. It is a new listing, so how long it lasts is unknown.

Look for 18 inches or more if you are taller than about 5 ft 8 in. Shorter users are comfortable at 15 to 16 inches. Canadian buyers 5 ft 9 in or taller call the Niceday's 15.5 in stride choppy. A 5-foot buyer could not use the Teeter's 18 in stride. Check the rated height range.

An elliptical is usually easier on the knees, because your feet never leave the pedals. A seated cross trainer such as the Teeter FreeStep LT3 reduces the load further. A treadmill loads your joints with every step. An exercise bike is another gentle choice.

Only for light use. The Weslo Momentum G 4.1, at $167.85, is the one model under $200 here. It has a 12 in stride and a 90-day warranty. Thirty-eight percent of Canadian reviews are one or two stars, and some owners report a leg column snapping.

It depends on the seller. Several Canadian reviewers say the Sunny warranty was not honoured. The Teeter listing calls support US-based. Niceday and FOUSAE give one year. Buy from Amazon.ca or the brand, and ask about service first.
